Strawberry Sunday

The pink begonia is all dressed up in it's Sunday best, swirling in impatiens and dripping with lobelia. The ivy gives the finishing touch

Suggested serving: 12" (30cm) hanging pot or 14-16" (35-40cm) patio pot<

Temperature: shade, part sun; low to moderate heat

Ingredients:

  12-14" (30-35cm) 16" (40cm)
+ Begonias, Non-stop, pink or rose 1 3
- Impatients, Pink Swirl 3 3
* lobelia, trailing, sapphire 2 2
± ivy, English 1 1

Variation: Use an American Giant rather than a Non-Stop begonia in an upright pot. You can also skip the ivy and just put in an extra lobelia plant.

Tip... Trim off the single begonia blossoms to get larger double flowers

Piquante Daisy

The white daisy-like Snowland has a yellow center that brightens up the pot. The pompom marigolds contrast well with the dark and dainty lobelia. All in all, it's a class act.

Temperature: Shade, part sun, sun; moderate heat

Ingredients:

  12-14" (30-35cm) 16" (40cm)

Herb Dip with Veggies

I got 14 tomatoes off the one plant when I made up this pot in my test kitchen. I might add that the whole pot was a favorite of my family and friends! It's like a living salad with all kind of interesting texture and great scent and, yes, even color - remember, tomatoes do bloom and cukes have little yellow blossoms. The marjoram and the thyme put in their twos scents worth with color too, if they are neglected long enough to bloom! Oh, yes - even the violas are edible!

Suggested serving: 18-20" (45-50cm) patio pot

Temperature: sun, part sun; moderate to high heat

Ingredients:

  18-20" (45-50cm)
H Tomato, bush (hybrid=best result) 1
# cucumber, bush type 1
x dill plant, fernleaf 1
+ parsley, Moss Curled 1
* marjoram 1
0 thyme 1
= violas, mixed (optional) 2

At serving time: Fertilize regularly; water deeply, but allow to dry out in- between. Trim herbs as needed in the kitchen; eat tomatoes and cucumbers when ripe; enjoy.

Variation: Thyme comes in various flavors, scents and colors - try lemon thyme or apple or others varieties; French thyme has narrow leaves and English thyme has broad.

Soupe du jour

This simmering of veggies and flora is to be savored by more than the sense of sight. The alyssum adds perfume; the corn and the geranium add texture; the tomato, taste; and if you use a miniature popcorn, it will add sound to the repertoire.

I should let you know that I got more tomatoes off that Tumbler tomato than I have ever seen on one plant. Though they are the size of a cherry tomato, they have a true garden tomato taste.

Suggested serving: 20-22" (50-55cm) patio pot

Temperature: part sun, sun; moderate to high heat

Ingredients:

  20-22" (50-55cm)
# baby corn (I used Cutie Blues) 1
= geraniums, Zonal, red 2
0 tomato, Tumbler 1
x rudbeckia, 8-10" (20-25cm) 4
* alyssum, purple 2

At serving time: Fertilize heavily, water deeply. Deadhead geraniums as needed, allowing the top of the soil to dry out a bit between watering. Pig out on cherry tomatoes when ripe; have a feed of corn.
